Draft Horse WIP 7

25 May

It’s time for another update on my draft horse.  I’m working on the neck now, which at first felt like a big, boring mass of one value, but as I have worked on it, the range of values seems quite varied.  It’s been fun.  Next thing comes all of the elaborate harnessing on the neck and chest.  Even though most of the horse is in place, there is still much to do in this drawing.

Thanks for looking. 🙂

This piece is really looking great, the shadows of the harness and detail gives such a realistic feel. Do you mark down the hours it takes when you work on a piece like this?

Thanks so much, Inari! I do like strong lighting in my reference images, because they let you really play with values. The shadows of the harness are fun to recreate. I’ve never kept very accurate track of how long my drawings take me, but one like this is usually 100 + hours…sometimes 200 depending on the detail and technique. It’s pretty slow, but I don’t mind. 🙂
