Oliver Scratchboard (Finished)

As the time flies by and Christmas gets closer, I have been brazenly spending some of my drawing time on this rather than the annual Christmas card.  However, that project is moving along too.  No peeking!  I’ll share it on Christmas Eve. 😉

In the meantime, I think my portrait of Oliver is finished.  I enjoyed trying to capture his likeness very much.  He’s been my friend for almost eleven years, and every day is a little brighter because he’s here with me.  Maybe I’m becoming a crazy cat lady, but I firmly believe that not all friends have to be human.

– Tools used are a #11 X-Acto Knife, and a blunter scratchboard tool for the thick whiskers.  I also used a Faber Castell Pitt Artist Pen for some corrections.

Oliver WIP 6

Here’s a bit more progress on Ollie.  Slow and steady, one scratch at a time, that’s the key.  I’m making my way down the neck, into all those luxurious layers of kitty fur. Even as I write this, my Oliver is “petting” my leg, jealous of the time I’m spending on the computer and not fawning over him.  Therefore, I will keep this brief and turn my attention back to him.  You’ve got to love pets. 🙂

I’m still picking away at this drawing, and those stripes and flakes in the fur are keeping things interesting.  It’s nice to have the head mostly in place now, and I hope to keep at this despite several other art projects.

Thanks for following along as I go.  I hope you like this. 🙂

Oliver WIP 4

Here’s some progress on my Oliver scratchboard.  I’ve given it careful consideration, and have come to the conclusion that he does, indeed, look better with two eyes. 😉

I’m enjoying this one, even if progress is slow.  My annual Christmas card drawing is also in the works now, so my time needs to be divided between the two drawings.

I hope you like this.  Thanks for looking!

Oliver WIP Part 3

I took some time off from this scratchboard to finish up my commission, but now am back to my scratchboard.  This may be a slow WIP because I’ve also just started in on my annual Christmas card drawing.  This will be the 11th drawing I’ll have done for the card…you can see my previous Christmas drawings here.  As usual, I must keep this drawing a secret until it is completed.  It’s my Christmas gift to a lot of people, so I like it to be a surprise.

Anyway, back to Oliver.  I’ve hesitated about the ear a little bit because the shape and angle was tricky to get right.  I’ve moved ahead with care, and am hoping it goes well.  What I’m really looking forward to are those “flakes” of fur that run down his neck and chest.  You know what I mean…the way a cat’s fur seperates into flaky layers…kind of like a tender fish filet? 😉  That will be a fun texture to draw.

He’s coming along, anyway.  Thank you for looking! 🙂

Oliver WIP Part 2

Here’s an update on Oliver.  Each time I start a scratchboard, I seem to like it more than I expect to.  There’s such satisfaction in the stark white marks on black – the contrast is the most beautiful aspect of scratchboard.

It probably doesn’t look much different, because I’ve not gone much farther than the last update.  It takes some careful planning to get the markings on the cat’s face right; those intricate stripes on the forehead are a big part of capturing Oliver’s likeness.  One ear is also in place now.  Starting to look like a cat at least. 🙂

Oliver WIP

It seems that all I’ve posted in some time are sculptures.  In case anyone is wondering, yes I am still drawing.  At the moment, I am actually working on a commission drawing.  I will post that once it’s finished and delivered to my client. 🙂

I’m also working on a scratchboard drawing too.  Any of you who have been following my blog for very long may remember my scratchboard portrait of my cat, Oliver.  Well, he must look good in black, because I’ve just got to draw him again in scratchboard.  He has been with me for over ten years, and he’s really a wonderful little friend.  I just wanted to draw him again, because those intricate stripes and expressive nuances are irresistible.

This is 5×7 inches, and so far, I’m only using a #11 X-Acto Knife (pictured below) for this.

Here is my handsome fella, Ollie.

Here are the first two progress images of my scratchboard.  I’ve got a long way to go.  I hope you’ll feel free to come along and follow the progress.  Thank you for looking! 🙂
