Catching Up

Hello dear readers,

My, my, it’s been a great long while since I’ve made a post here!  It has been a busy, productive, and creative time for me.  I’ve been keeping up my new website, have started an Instagram account, have been completing several commissions, and somewhere in the background, have been working on creative writing.

But I would like to take a moment now to catch you up on some of my latest creative projects.

The Christmas Drawing.

As always, we made our annual Christmas card with a new drawing of mine.  We then went about making a card to fit the drawing.  That’s always great fun!  The original drawing is 10 x 10 inches drawn with Sakura Pigma Micron pens.  We did something whimsical this time, which was a lovely change of pace.

I’ve also been working on commissions.  Below, you’ll see a pair of 12 x 12 inch sheep drawings that I recently completed.  They were drawn in ink (brush tip gray tones for the soft areas and Sakura Pigmas for the details) with white charcoal for the wool and highlights.  They were really fun for a change.

I’ve also been working on a commission of a Great Dane portrait.  I love Great Danes – I hope one day to have one of my own.  This was such a fun portrait!  Her name was Lila, and sadly, she had passed away.  It was an honor to get to draw her.  This is 8×10 inches in my usual pen and ink.

And, most recently, I was commissioned to create a Charging Bull wire sculpture.  Did I ever have fun making this guy!  I so enjoyed creating the sense of action in this piece.  It is made with dark annealed wire of gauges 16, 18, 19, 22, and 28.  The horns are embellishments I found in an art store.  This is a big fellow, measuring 12 inches long by 6 inches tall by 4 1/2 inches wide.  He weighs over 6 1/2 pounds.  What fun to make this piece!

There are probably other artworks I’ve done since my last post, but these are some of the highlights.  Next on my drawing board is a series of three sheep drawings that I’ve been commissioned to do by a friend.  It’s been busy, but a happy busy. 🙂

Be sure to visit my website to keep up with my latest projects.  Thanks for checking in!

Shelby the Blue Heeler Commission – Finished

After filling in the last few details, thickening up her fur, finishing her collar and tags, and, of course, signing it, this drawing is now complete.

Shelby is a beautiful dog, and it was a pleasure to draw her.  With all of that thick, plush fur, the deep blacks of her face and spots, and the whiskers…this one kept me alert and focused.  It was a great dog to draw!

Shelby

– Measures 8×10 inches, drawn on Strathmore 500 series Bristol Plate paper.

– Drawn with Sakura Pigma Micron pens, ranging in size from 005 (primarily), 01, and a touch of 03.  Despite the darks needed for this drawing, I stuck with a very fine-tip pen as much as I could, so it wouldn’t look blocky or rushed.

Shelby the Blue Heeler Commission WIP 7

I’ve done quite a bit with this since I last posted. The fur around the neck and chest is thick and dense, and it’s been interesting trying to get the textures and values to work. She has muscular shoulders, so there is a lot of width to them. The collar is more in place, and the metal parts I’m saving for last, because they will be fun to do.  I’ve gone a little darker again with the mask on her face, and have added some more textures to her face as well. Not far from done now. 🙂

Shelby the Blue Heeler Commission WIP 6

Hello readers,

I’ve done a fair amount of work on Shelby since my last post.  The areas that I’ve been working on seem a little less exciting than those facial features, so I thought I’d wait until there was more progress to share.  Since my last update, I’ve gone over the entire drawing and really made those darks pop, as this is the darkest coloring I’ve done on a dog.  I’ve thickened up the fur along the left side of her head, and am now working my way down her neck and shoulder.  All of these random chunks of fur feel very abstract…as I draw, I tend to feel like what I’m drawing looks nothing like fur, but in the end, it kind of pans out.  I got a start on her collar today, as well.  It’s coming along, and I’m enjoying this drawing very much.

Shelby the Blue Heeler Commission WIP 5

Shelby now has a nose.  I’d been avoiding the nose until more of the face was in place.  I keep a ruler at hand and have been frequently checking the angles to be sure the nose did not get drawn crooked.  I can breathe a little easier now that the nose is set in place.  She needed the nose…I am feeling happy with this drawing at this point.

Shelby the Blue Heeler Commission WIP 4

Shelby is now starting to look more like a dog as her snout comes into focus,  I’ve drawn her mouth and have a start on the tongue.  I have never drawn a panting dog in pen and ink, so this has been a good challenge.  I’ve also had to practice my negative drawing skills by drawing around the white whiskers that hang down over her mouth.  She’s taking shape. 🙂

Shelby the Blue Heeler Commission WIP 3

I guess I am a little late to be wishing you all a Happy New Year!  I’ve had a very busy Christmas/New Year season, and have not had much time for art, so my blog has been quiet.

But I’m back now with an update on Shelby.  I took a bit of a break from this drawing over Christmas, but now, I am back on track and working at it again.  Just yesterday, I finally drew the second eye, and now that Shelby has both ears and both eyes, I do feel that she looks more balanced.  Her black “mask” marking is a bit slower to draw because it’s so black, and takes a lot of dots to get dark enough.  I don’t mind that a bit, though.  I’ve also began working some contrast into the whites on her face, which are a bit freckled and smoke-colored in the photos I have of her.  Today, I’ve started on her mouth, but I haven’t gotten far enough to warrant another updated image.  So stay tuned.  More updates are on the way!
