Norman WIP 2

I’ve got Norm’s eyes in place now.  I wanted to build the values very gently, so I used a 005 size pen, and a somewhat dried out one at that.  I keep the older, well-used pens because they create smaller dots while still being consistent in their performance.  They are not good for building quick values, but for delicate work, the worn-out pens are the best.

I’ve also got the second ear further along, too, as well as the values across the head and cheeks.  He’s taking shape. 🙂

Norman WIP

Happy New Year!

It has been quite a while since I’ve had a pen and ink work-in-progress to share, so at last, here is something new.  I’ve been meaning to draw a cat in ink for years.  I’m a cat person, but tend to end up drawing dogs.  Oh, I love dogs, too…but there’s something about the quiet presence of cats that I find so soothing and comforting.

You’ve seen me draw Oliver…twice in fact.  Both times, it was in scratchboard.  I felt it was high time that I draw my other lovely housecat, Norman.  Norman has been my pal for a few years now.  He is a gorgeous tuxedo cat with such beautiful, perfect markings.  He’s stately and beautiful…and yet, he is a complete clown that makes me laugh all the time.  There’s something in his playful actions and wide-eyed expression that makes me think he is just slightly insane.  I love this guy! 🙂

Here is my reference photo of him.

And here are the first three installments of this WIP.  I started with a pretty detailed graphite outline, and then began with the ink.

This is 8×10 inches in size, and I’m using Strathmore 500 Series Bristol Plate paper.  I’m using Sakura Pigma Micron pens for this.

Draft Horse Finished

At long last, after working on this for the last six months, I am finally calling this piece complete.  It was worth the time…I had a lot of fun with this drawing, and I’ve learned a lot, too.  The variety of textures in the reference made this very challenging, but as I’ve said before on this blog, I do love a challenge. 🙂

Draft Horse

– 8×8 inch Ampersand scratchboard.

– Tools used: Mostly an X-Acto Knife with a #11 blade, and also two sizes of fiberglass brush, and Faber-Castell Pitt pens.  I used the black pen for correcting mistakes, and various gray shades to add depth and dimension.  The leather and fabric textures were done by “whitening” out the shape with a fiberglass brush and X-Acto Knife, and then going over them with pale gray pens to obscure the individual marks and give the surface a soft, even texture.  In the leather parts, I went in stages.  White out, soften with pen, white out, soften with pen, and finally ended with bright, worn spots where they were needed.

Draft Horse WIP 8

I was looking back in my journal last night and realized that I wrote about the day I started this draft horse drawing…it was way back in February.  Not sure why it’s taking so long with this drawing, but I don’t mind.  Just as long as I can get it done before my upcoming art show in August!

So, what else can I say about this drawing?  The neck is mostly in place, and now I’m working on the leather collar part.  The smooth texture is a bit difficult to get right with my X-Acto knife, so I’m using a fiberglass brush for that.  For anyone unfamiliar with this tool, this is what it looks like.  It’s a sort of fine sandpapery texture that rubs the ink off the scratchboard in a softer way than a blade.

I’m not thrilled with the way the leather and fabric looks, but with some more layers, I think it will get better.

Draft Horse WIP 7

It’s time for another update on my draft horse.  I’m working on the neck now, which at first felt like a big, boring mass of one value, but as I have worked on it, the range of values seems quite varied.  It’s been fun.  Next thing comes all of the elaborate harnessing on the neck and chest.  Even though most of the horse is in place, there is still much to do in this drawing.

Shelby the Blue Heeler Commission – Finished

After filling in the last few details, thickening up her fur, finishing her collar and tags, and, of course, signing it, this drawing is now complete.

Shelby is a beautiful dog, and it was a pleasure to draw her.  With all of that thick, plush fur, the deep blacks of her face and spots, and the whiskers…this one kept me alert and focused.  It was a great dog to draw!

Shelby

– Measures 8×10 inches, drawn on Strathmore 500 series Bristol Plate paper.

– Drawn with Sakura Pigma Micron pens, ranging in size from 005 (primarily), 01, and a touch of 03.  Despite the darks needed for this drawing, I stuck with a very fine-tip pen as much as I could, so it wouldn’t look blocky or rushed.

Shelby the Blue Heeler Commission WIP 7

I’ve done quite a bit with this since I last posted. The fur around the neck and chest is thick and dense, and it’s been interesting trying to get the textures and values to work. She has muscular shoulders, so there is a lot of width to them. The collar is more in place, and the metal parts I’m saving for last, because they will be fun to do.  I’ve gone a little darker again with the mask on her face, and have added some more textures to her face as well. Not far from done now. 🙂
