Shelby the Blue Heeler Commission – Finished

After filling in the last few details, thickening up her fur, finishing her collar and tags, and, of course, signing it, this drawing is now complete.

Shelby is a beautiful dog, and it was a pleasure to draw her.  With all of that thick, plush fur, the deep blacks of her face and spots, and the whiskers…this one kept me alert and focused.  It was a great dog to draw!

Shelby

– Measures 8×10 inches, drawn on Strathmore 500 series Bristol Plate paper.

– Drawn with Sakura Pigma Micron pens, ranging in size from 005 (primarily), 01, and a touch of 03.  Despite the darks needed for this drawing, I stuck with a very fine-tip pen as much as I could, so it wouldn’t look blocky or rushed.

Shelby the Blue Heeler Commission WIP 5

Shelby now has a nose.  I’d been avoiding the nose until more of the face was in place.  I keep a ruler at hand and have been frequently checking the angles to be sure the nose did not get drawn crooked.  I can breathe a little easier now that the nose is set in place.  She needed the nose…I am feeling happy with this drawing at this point.

Shelby the Blue Heeler Commission WIP 4

Shelby is now starting to look more like a dog as her snout comes into focus,  I’ve drawn her mouth and have a start on the tongue.  I have never drawn a panting dog in pen and ink, so this has been a good challenge.  I’ve also had to practice my negative drawing skills by drawing around the white whiskers that hang down over her mouth.  She’s taking shape. 🙂

Oliver Scratchboard (Finished)

As the time flies by and Christmas gets closer, I have been brazenly spending some of my drawing time on this rather than the annual Christmas card.  However, that project is moving along too.  No peeking!  I’ll share it on Christmas Eve. 😉

In the meantime, I think my portrait of Oliver is finished.  I enjoyed trying to capture his likeness very much.  He’s been my friend for almost eleven years, and every day is a little brighter because he’s here with me.  Maybe I’m becoming a crazy cat lady, but I firmly believe that not all friends have to be human.

Oliver

– 5×7 inch Ampersand Scratchboard

– Tools used are a #11 X-Acto Knife, and a blunter scratchboard tool for the thick whiskers.  I also used a Faber Castell Pitt Artist Pen for some corrections.

Click any of the images if you’d like to see them larger.

Oliver WIP 5

I’m still picking away at this drawing, and those stripes and flakes in the fur are keeping things interesting.  It’s nice to have the head mostly in place now, and I hope to keep at this despite several other art projects.

Thanks for following along as I go.  I hope you like this. 🙂

Buddy the Blue Heeler – Finished

I am pleased to say that this drawing is finally finished.  The owner of this dog was very pleased with the likeness.  This was not a commission, but I did use a friend’s reference photo for this dog, so his approval was important to me.

I’ve pushed the darks all around the piece, added some texture, darkened the shoulder and neck, and finished the collar since the last update.  Of course, I also added the whiskers.  No dog or cat is complete without whiskers!

I have had a great deal of fun with this drawing, and though it’s good to be done, I enjoyed it so much I was almost a bit sad to see it finished.  Ah well, on to the next project!

Buddy the Blue Heeler

– 8×10 inches in size

– Drawn with Prismacolors Fine Line Markers in sizes .005, .01, and .03.

– Drawn on Strathmore 400 Series Bristol Smooth paper

Kitty Sittin’ Pretty

It’s about time I post this sculpture; it’s been done for months!  I had it, along with the majority of my other artwork, on display at a local nursing home for a couple a months.  They have this large case which is available for people to bring in any collections of items so that the residents and the visitors of the nursing home have something fresh to look at every couple of months.  It was a pleasure to have my artwork there, but as usual, it is always good to get my work back home again. 🙂

This is my second cat wire sculpture.  Cats are tricky due to their delicate features, flexible shape, and fine-boned extremities.  This cat, sitting as it is, was difficult because of the curving spine and the big, round hip bones.  It was good to call this one complete.

Kitty Sittin’ Pretty

– Made with 17 gauge steel fencing wire, as well as finer craft wire for the whiskers and ears.

– Measures approximately 5 and 1/2 inches tall by 5 and 1/4 inches long by 2 and 1/2 inches wide.

Hope you like this!  Thanks for looking.
